Purrfect Reading Challenge 2019

This is another one led by Yvonne at Socrates’ Reviews, and you can use her Purrfect Reading Challenge 2019 page to sign up too. If you don’t have a blog, you can use the Purrfect Reading Challenge Goodreads group to keep track. I use both, checks/balances and all that. I was just going to leave this challenge as a link on the 2019 Reading Challenges page, but I wanted to link up on Yvonne’s blog and decided to keep a list here after all.

Based on the number of cat mysteries I read last year, I upped my last year’s number to Catnip or at least 31. A cat does have to have a major role in the book, not just be a cute kitty on the cover. 😉

The levels as shown on Yvonne’s blog:

Purring – Read 1-10 cat mysteries
Kneading – Read 11-20 cat mysteries
Meowing – Read 21-30 cat mysteries
Catnip – Go crazy and read at least 31 and go as high as you’d like – the sky is the limit!

Have fun reading mysteries with cats! (Magical Cats by Sophie Kelly is a really good series!)

My 31:

  1. A Charming Cure by Tonya Kappes A Charming Cure–Tonya Kappes–Mr. Prince Charming, June’s cat always plays an important part in this series.
  2. Death and Daisies (A Magic Garden Mystery #2) Death and Daisies–Amanda Flower–Ivanhoe is a very intuitive Scottish Fold cat that pays attention and knows what people are telling him–he sometimes acts on it.
  3. A Scandal in Scarlet (A Sherlock Holmes Bookshop Mystery, #4) A Scandal in Scarlet–Vicki Delany–Moriarty is the shop cat who usually doesn’t do much out of the ordinary, but I thought this should count because he actually does something important to the case.
  4. Dead Editor File by G.G. Collins Dead Editor File–G.G. Collins–Oscar is Taylor Browning’s Abyssinian that almost seems human.
  5. Dead as a Door Knocker by Diane Kelly Dead as a Door Knocker–Diane Kelly–Sawdust, Whitney’s cat, gets to play a important part in apprehending the killer.
  6. Murders and Metaphors by Amanda Flower Murders and Metaphors–Amanda Flower–Emerson, the bookstore cat, is an important main character
  7. Death by Coffee by Alex Erickson Death by Coffee–Alex Erickson–Bookshop cat Trouble lives up to his name, while his litter brother, Misfit, wreaks havoc in Krissy’s house.
  8. Live and Let Chai by Bree Baker Live and Let Chai--Bree Baker–There may not be a cat on the cover, but don’t let that fool you. Maggie is an awesome white cat that sort of came with Everly’s house, and I think she is going to be an important character.
  9. No Good Tea Goes Unpunished by Bree Baker No Good Tea Goes Unpunished–Bree Baker–Maggie the cat continues to sense danger and hiss if Everly is in danger
  10. Restaurant Weeks Are Murder by Libby Klein Restaurant Weeks Are Murder–Libby Klein–Figaro is such a stinker, but I found myself cheering him on this time lol
  11. One Taste Too Many by Debra H. Goldstein One Taste Too Many–Debra H. Goldstein–RahRah is quite a cat and helped take down a killer
  12. This Spells Trouble by Stacey Alabaster This Spells Trouble–Stacey Alabaster–Indy is Ruby’s talking cat
  13. Something Read, Something Dead by Eva Gates Something Read, Something Dead–Eva Gates–Charles is the library cat
  14. The Pomeranian Always Barks Twice by Alex Erickson The Pomeranian Always Barks Twice–Alex Erickson–Wheels the cat is the regular pet that stays–the others are going to their forever homes. Wheels is pretty awesome!
  15. Cat Got Your Crown: A Kitty Couture Mystery Cat Got Your Crown–Julie Chase–Penny is the princess and shop cat, but newcomer Rune is the intuitive one.
  16. Lending a Paw by Laurie Cass Lending a Paw–Laurie Cass–Eddie is the most awesome cat and loves going with Minnie in the bookmobile as its unofficial mascot.
  17. Murder Once Removed by S.C. Perkins Murder Once Removed–S.C. Perkins–NPH (Neil Patrick Housecat) belongs to Lucy’s condo manager, but NPH is fiercely protective of Lucy
  18. Murder in Tranquility Park by J.D. Griffo Murder in Tranquility Park–J.D. Griffo (Lola the cat is quite the diva–she knows her real name is Gina Lollobrigada)
  19. Sweet Revenge by Morgana Best Sweet Revenge–Morgana Best (Mongrel the cat was a good protector)
  20. If the Broom Fits by Sara Bourgeois If the Broom Fits–Sara Bourgeois (Merimus the cat was the family talking familiar)

Cruisin’ Through the Cozies 2019

UPDATE: As of 2/11/19 this challenge is complete for 2019

I decided to do a page on this after all, so that I could link up with the others doing the challenge. This challenge is run by Yvonne from Socrates’ Reviews and this is her Cruisin’ Through the Cozies sign-up page.

I’ll be listing the books here after all, since we’re supposed to link them to a review.

Here’s an excerpt from her blog telling about the two options. I chose A this year:

“A) Read only cozy mysteries of your choice.

Or

B) Read one book from these sub-genres:

– One from culinary (anything dealing with food: restaurants, baked goods, etc.)
– One from animal related (cats, dogs, birds, etc.)
– One from craft related (any kind of hobbies – knitting, crocheting, scrapbooking, etc.)
– One from paranormal (witches, vampires, etc.)
– One from cozy mysteries based outside the US (example: Belinda Lawrence series (British))
– One career-based cozy mystery (housekeeping, wedding planner, etc.)
– One holiday based (set during any holiday – Christmas, Thanksgiving, Valentines, etc.)
– One travel mystery (character could be on a cruise, touring another area, etc.)
– One historical mystery (any mystery not set in the present)
– One is your choice! (freebie!)”

There are four levels that you’ll see on her page. This is the one I’m doing:

Level four (Sleuth Extraordinaire) –
A)Read 40 cozy mysteries of your choice.

Last year I did Option B, and while it was a lot more challenging, I thought I better go with A this year seeing how I’ve gone a little crazy over challenges for 2019. 😉

Happy Cruisin’!

Wine and Punishment–review

I really loved this first book in the new Literary Pub series by well-established author, Sarah Fox. The characters were so well done that I would definitely want to meet them and have some of them as friends, especially Aunt Gilda! I’m very anxious for the next book in this series!

My Goodreads review:

Wine and Punishment (Literary Pub Mystery, #1)Wine and Punishment by Sarah Fox

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This was seriously so good I could barely put it down. I did manage to squeeze in the time to read it all in one day. I really loved this first in a new series, and I’m already anxious to read the next book.

Sadie Coleman had moved to Shady Creek, VT after losing her job leaving a lying, dishonest ex-boyfriend behind. Eric was apparently so determined to win her back that he’d bought a ring and traveled from Boston to Shady Creek, but he ended up dead before he could do anything with that ring. Sadie was the person of interest even though she insisted she hadn’t seen the man when he was in town, nor had she spoken to him in over four months.

The side story of Sadie’s neighboring small business owner, Grayson Blake was interesting. He seemed to have a chip on his shoulder concerning her, but everyone else swore he was so nice and polite. It was a nice switch-up to have a female detective in charge of the case. She was by-the-book, but she was very fair and didn’t jump to the conclusion of Sadie or anyone else being guilty until evidence pointed that way. Despite their initial differences, Grayson came in very handy towards the end, and it seems as though he and Sadie could be making amends and even becoming friendlier.

I really enjoyed the character of Aunt Gilda! Everyone needs an aunt like her. She was completely in favor of Sadie buying the old mill and leaving it as a pub (but adding books) even though Sadie’s mom wasn’t. Gilda offered her a place to stay a couple of times when someone was threatening Sadie. The showdown was pretty exciting and led to a fun ending. For drink and muffin fans, there are three drink recipes at the end and a recipe for carrot muffins.

Disclaimer: I received a copy of this book from the publisher which in no way swayed how or if I would write a favorable review. My opinions are my own.

First in Series Challenge 2019

As far as I know, no one has a challenge like this out there, so I made this up to fit my own need, which would be to read some first in series books that I have stored in a drawer. There are twenty-three of them, and my plan is to read them throughout the year. The fun part will be incorporating them into the other challenges. Since these are all physical books, they will definitely count for the Mount TBR Challenge. Once I read a book, I’ll make it into a link that goes to its review page here.

If anyone wants to join me on this, the more the merrier! I have no prizes to give, I don’t require any periodic links check in, but it’s always nice to do reviews, and I definitely recommend doing that. I don’t have a linky widget in case anyone actually does want to do it. If you want to do it (using your own list of books, of course) just leave your page link down in the comments, so that others can peek at your progress. I have comments set to moderate but will approve it as soon as I can. It’s gonna be a good reading year!

Color Coded Challenge 2019

Adding a little comment that this wasn’t as easy as I thought it would be. I wasn’t reading carefully enough and totally skipped over the whole dominant color thing, so I’m trying this again. Good thing I realized it as I was linking up my reviews! I did have to ask Bev if she would please delete a couple of my links so I can add different ones there. Most of the time, a cozy mystery has so many colors on the page, it’s hard to tell if one is even dominant, but I’ll be a little more observant from here on! That’s why I bolded some of the instructions, mainly for my benefit and reminders! 😉

Another challenge run by Bev from My Reader’s Block. Her sign-up page is My Reader’s Block Color Coded Challenge 2019. This one seemed so easy, I couldn’t possibly resist! It runs from January 1, 2019 to December 31, 2019 just like all the others except for I Spy.

From her blog to explain a little more: “Once again the categories will be more open–the color may either be named in the title or it may appear as the dominant color for the cover of the book. For “implies color” the image implying cover should dominate the cover.”

Here’s what I’ll be reading and adding the books below as I read them:

~Read nine books in the following categories:
1. A book with “Blue” or any shade of Blue (Turquoise, Aquamarine, Navy, etc.) in the title/on the cover. Batter Off Dead (A Southern Cake Baker Mystery, #2) Batter Off Dead #2 Southern Cake Baker–Maymee Bell
2. A book with “Red” or any shade of Red (Scarlet, Crimson, Burgundy, etc.) in the title/on the cover.   In Peppermint Peril, #1 Book Tea Shop–Joy Avon
This book has Scarlet in the title: A Scandal in Scarlet (A Sherlock Holmes Bookshop Mystery, #4) A Scandal in Scarlet, #4 Sherlock Holmes Bookshop–Vicki Delany
3. A book with “Yellow” or any shade of Yellow (Gold, Lemon, Maize, etc.) in the title/on the cover.  A Midwinter’s Tail, #4 Lucky Paws Petsitting–Bethany Blake
4. A book with “Green” or any shade of Green (Emerald, Lime, Jade, etc.) in the title/on the cover.  Candy Apple Killer, #3 Apple Orchard–Chelsea Thomas
5. A book with  “Brown” or any shade of Brown (Tan, Beige, Sand, etc.) in the title/on the cover. Death and Daisies (A Magic Garden Mystery #2) Death and Daisies, #2 Magic Garden–Amanda Flower
6. A book with “Black” or any shade of Black (Jet, Ebony, Charcoal, etc.) in the title/on the cover. The Novel Art of Murder (Mystery Bookshop, #3) The Novel Art of Murder, #3 Mystery Bookshop–V.M. Burns
7. A book with “White” or any shade of White (Ivory, Eggshell, Cream, etc.) in the title/on the cover.  A Charming Cure, #2 Magical Cures–Tonya Kappes
8. A book with any other color in the title/on the cover A Charming Cure by Tonya Kappes  A Charming Cure, #2 Magical Cures–Tonya Kappes (Purple, Orange, Silver, Magenta, Pink, etc.).  Jeopardy in January, #1 Calendar Mysteries–Camilla Chafer
9. A book with a word that implies color in the title/on the cover (Rainbow, Polka-dot, Plaid, Shadow, Paint, Ink, etc.).

I Spy Challenge 2019

I found this challenge as an I Spy Goodreads group, but I signed up through the moderator’s blog too, Faith Hope Cherry Tea-I Spy Challenge 2019 (sign up here). There’s a list of 50 things to look for in a book, its theme/genre, cover description etc. Since I only read cozy mysteries, the numbers you find missing below are items I knew I’d never read or as in another item, getting a book from a Little Library. I’m pretty sure in my area there aren’t any of those, just as there aren’t coffee shops with books for sale in them. As I go through the list, I might even end up deleting more of them. I just found out the buddy read is done through the Goodreads group, so we’ll see how that one goes.

The cool thing about this challenge is that it started December 1, 2018, so I already had a decent amount of books I could add, as you’ll see below in my list. I’ll include covers here too.

Start date: December 1, 2018

Library Love Challenge 2019

Even though I own a ton of books and even more e-books, I still love going to the library! Here’s a challenge from Angela at Angel’s Guilty Pleasures, the Library Love Challenge for 2019 (sign up here). Show your local library a little more love this coming year!

I’ll be doing the first level, Dewey Decimal 12 books since I really never know when the urge will hit me to go to the library, or need to use Libby/Overdrive (usually for a book club if the book is expensive!). I’d like to think I’ll borrow more than 12 books, but I’m playing it safe, since I’ve been pigging out on challenges. 😉

Twelve books is the minimum to complete the challenge, and any format is okay as long as you’ve borrowed it from a library.

The levels:

Levels:

  • Dewey Decimal: Read 12 books
  • Thrifty Reader: Read 24 books
  • Overdrive Junkie: Read 36 books

Monthly Key Word Challenge 2019

Another challenge from Bev at My Reader’s Block, the Monthly Key Word Challenge 2019 (sign up here) is in its second year. The idea is to read one book a month having to do with any of the choice of eight keywords given for each month. I’m hoping to incorporate most of the challenges I’m doing with each other (keeps the gray cells working!) 😉

January–A Midwinter’s Tail–Bethany Blake (keyword was a form of winter); Snowy Misery–Wendy Meadows (keyword a form of snow)

February–Candy, Murder & Me–Carolyn Chambers Clark–the keyword was candy

Audio Book Challenge 2019

MID-YEAR UPDATE: June 15, 2019: I’ve listened to two audio books so far this year. Links have been added to the links on the Caffeinated Reviewer blog, and I’ve added them on this page below as well. I guess I’m almost halfway at the halfway point!

Kimberly from Caffeinated Reviewer is once again co-sponsoring the Audio Book Challenge 2019.  You can follow that second link and sign up. A blog isn’t needed to participate, but if you do have one, you can link up at the bottom. The image above can be grabbed from that page as well.

I didn’t have the best of success but I came in at two listens, which falls in the Newbie 1-5 category. I’ll be going for Newbie again in 2019, but I really want to make an effort to listen more. Good luck and happy listening while you commute, work out or if you’re like me, sew!

Here are all the levels:

  • Newbie (I’ll give it a try) 1-5
  • Weekend Warrior (I’m getting the hang of this) 5-10
  • Stenographer (can listen while multitasking) 10-15
  • Socially Awkward (Don’t talk to me) 15-20
  • Binge Listener (Why read when someone can do it for you) 20-30
  • My Precious (I had my earbuds surgically implanted) 30+
  • Marathoner (Look Ma No Hands) 50+

My Audio Books:

  1. Murder on the SS Rosa, #1 Ginger Gold–Lee Strauss
  2. Fixin’ to Die, #1 Kenni Lowry–Tonya Kappes
